FSU football: FSU’s 10 most important players for 2020 season
By Kelvin Hunt
Asante Samuel Jr.
The FSU football secondary has been atrocious by FSU standards the past couple of seasons. They gave up a record 30 touchdowns in 2018, and while 2019 seemed better, they still were not very good.
Some of that is due to the defensive line not being able to get more pressure on the quarterback. Other times, it was poor technique or miscommunication on assignments that were the culprit.
One bright spot was Asante Samuel Jr., who was No. 6 on the team in total tackles and led the team with 14 pass breakups last season. This guy is all dog and arguably the most competitive player on the defense.
He has struggled at times with larger receivers, but otherwise is excellent in coverage and not afraid to come downhill and be physical against the run.
I’m not saying he’s a lockdown corner, but he’s one of the better defensive backs in the ACC, and teams will have to think about whether or not to challenge his side of the field.
