FSU football: ACC Commissioner optimistic about playing football
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU football hopes to officially get the Mike Norvell era underway this fall. ACC Commissioner John Swofford is optimistic it’ll happen.
FSU football fans are eager to see the product Mike Norvell and staff can put out on the field in 2020.
The only problem is no one knows if or when it will happen, but ACC Commissioner John Swofford spoke on the upcoming season concerning the coronavirus pandemic.
He, like everyone else, is playing the wait and see approach, but Swofford spoke on a conference call Thursday and said all types of preparations are being discussed.
"“We are going into this year with the anticipation of playing,” he said, “but there’s a lot that can happen between now and then.”"
Of course, there are all types of variables that will come into play when or whether the season happens.
Things like colleges allowing students back on campus, testing, adjusting the schedule since the ACC has teams in 10 different states, and what if the coronavirus spikes once things resume?
Swofford addressed all of those topics, but there’s nothing concrete in place at the moment.
Thoughts
I understand both sides of the argument. On one hand, this coronavirus isn’t going to be eradicated anytime soon, and people can’t put their entire lives on hold in hopes of developing a vaccine that may never come to fruition.
On the other hand, a lot of people across every demographic, both young and old has died from this pandemic.
It’s like pick your poison at this point. Millions have lost their jobs, thousands have died, and millions are not living because of fear of what could happen if they contract the virus. However, at some point, difficult decisions have to be made and it looks like all the conferences are putting everything on the table in hopes of bringing sports back.
The UFC just had two events in Florida within the last week and seems to have been successful with only one fighter testing positive.
There wasn’t a live audience, but it was a start hopefully in regards to finding procedures and protocols that can help things move forward with college football being played in some capacity soon.
