FSU football: 5 greatest Noles to never win Heisman Trophy
By Kelvin Hunt
Deion Sanders
Deion Sanders, the player that made it cool to be an FSU Seminole. The player that began the tradition of calling the Noles “DBU,” the only unanimous two-time All-American in FSU history and a Jim Thorpe winner as the nation’s best defensive back.
He’s tied for No. 3 on the FSU all-time interceptions list, and tied for first with four interceptions returned for a touchdown.
Sanders doesn’t get credit for just how good he was in college, but he’s one of 11 FSU players with their number honored.
He is also FSU’s all-time leader in punt returns and punt return yardage. Both his prowess as a defensive back and return specialist followed him to the NFL, where he became a multiple-time First-Team All-Pro in both categories and Super Bowl champion.
Sanders was selected No. 5 overall by the Atlanta Falcons in the 1989 NFL Draft. He’s in the College and NFL Hall of Fame.
Sanders finished eighth in the 1988 Heisman voting after tallying five interceptions, returning two of them for touchdowns. He had 33 punt returns for 503 yards and two touchdowns.
