Special Teams

FSU football had a huge edge in special teams over Alabama according to advanced metrics. The Noles checked in at No. 5 with Alabama checking in at No. 37.

The raw stats support the sentiment as well. Alabama had an edge at punting and punt return, where they averaged 14 yards per return with three touchdowns while averaging 46.88 yards per punt.

FSU averaged 10 yards per return and 41.07 yards per punt.

When it came to kickoff return, the Noles averaged 28.16 yards per return with two touchdowns. Alabama averaged 23.73 with one returned for a touchdown.

There was a huge gap when it came to field goal kicking. Roberto Aguayo had one of the best years ever, converting 21 of 22 attempts and making 94 PAT’s.

Alabama only converted 13 of 20 field-goal attempts while making 65 PAT’s. Alabama’s weaknesses on special teams cost them the chance to face FSU football for the national title.

FSU’s strength on special teams was one of the reasons they were able to come back and beat Auburn in the second half.
