Defense

Alabama’s defense in 2012 was excellent, and most people seem to think they had the same defense in 2013, but that wasn’t the case.

Advanced metrics state the Noles had the No. 2 ranked defense that only allowed 12.1 points per game and 4.09 yards per play.

Alabama’s vaunted rushing attack? FSU’s defense allowed 3.26 yards per rush with teams converting third downs only 31.92 percent of the time.

The Noles only allowed 170 points the entire season. Alabama had the No. 4 ranked defense that allowed 13.9 points per game and allowed 4.83 yards per play.

They allowed 3.32 yards per rush, and teams converted third downs 34.66 percent of the time. Alabama allowed 181 points that year, but remember, most of FSU’s defense was also playing hangman during most of the second half of games because games were over at halftime.

If you want to delve deeper we can. The Noles had 98 tackles for loss with 35 sacks. Alabama had 69 tackles for loss with just 22 sacks.

Turnovers are a random stat, but the Noles dominated that category by gaining 26 turnovers compared to 19 for Alabama.
