FSU basketball took care of business on the road against an NC State team that just demolished Duke. Some key takeaways from the win.

No. 8 FSU basketball (23-4, 13-3 ACC) didn’t play its best but played well enough to get a 67-61 road win in the ACC over an NC State (16-10, 7-8 ACC) team trying to make the NCAA Tournament.

The game should have never been that close as the Noles missed seven free throws in the final minute of the game.

They were 18-29 overall (62 percent) from the charity stripe with five of those misses coming from Malik Osborne who was 1-6. However, Osborne did contribute nine points, and a game-high 12 rebounds, with five of them being of the offensive variety.

FSU basketball didn’t shoot it well at all, shooting 40.7 percent overall and was only 5 of 19 from three-point land. They were led by M.J. Walker and Patrick Williams who had 12 points respectively. Williams continues to contribute more and more as the season progresses.

Three Takeaways

  • It was a good road win against a confident team
  • FSU only had 10 turnovers in the game
  • FSU continues to win ugly

NC State demolished Duke in their previous game at home, and came into the game 5-2 against Quad 1 opponents. The Noles were lucky to be only down five points after an awful first half. However, a 14-5 run early in the second half swung the momentum, and the Wolfpack was never able to recover.

One problem area for the Noles this season has been too many turnovers. The Noles only having 10 against the Wolfpack were a big part of them getting the win as they had a lot of empty offensive possessions.

FSU hasn’t been shooting the ball particularly well. Aside from against NC State, they’ve turned it over too much. They’ve struggled at the free-throw line in multiple games. Somehow they continue to put enough good stretches in games to pull out wins.

They’ll need to put it all together just as they did in their first game against Louisville several weeks ago. The Noles will host the No. 11 Cardinals Monday at 7 p.m. ET with the game airing on ESPN.
