‘Will’ Linebacker

This is the toughest position to predict. The best fit at “Will” would be sophomore Amari Gainer, who had a great showing in 2019.

However, it’s unclear how the new coaching staff plans to use him as he’s a versatile defender adept at pass rushing and in coverage. He could find himself at the “Fox” role in special packages, defensive end, or the “Star” position as a hybrid linebacker. However, the “Will” seems like the most natural fit for him in 2020.

Behind Gainer sit a variety of underclassmen who will be vying for playing time. Sophmore Jaleel McRae impressed last season with limited reps while totaling 15 tackles.

He will get significant reps at “Will” along with the “Mike” position. Behind him is Curtis Fann and Kevon Glenn who both redshirted in 2019. Fann could see reps at defensive end but expect both to get compete for playing time as linebackers.

Overall, the depth is thin, and it would not be surprising to see Leonard Warner get a significant amount of snaps at this position. Stephen Dix Jr. could also be a backup at this spot as well as “Mike”. A lot of the depth depends on Gainer and how many spots they plan to line him up at.
