FSU baseball: 3 takeaways from ‘Noles win over South Florida
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU baseball had to come from behind to take care of business against the South Florida Bulls to win their third straight game.
No. 14 FSU baseball (3-1, 0-0 ACC) had to dig themselves out of an early deficit against South Florida (2-3) Tuesday night.
The Noles spotted the Bulls a 1-0 lead in the top of the first and two more runs in the top of the third to trail 3-0 early.
FSU baseball got it going in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game 3-3 on RBI’s from Carter Smith and Tyler Martin.
The Noles broke the game open on a three-run bomb from Matheu Nelson in the bottom of the sixth and tapped on one more run in the bottom of the seventh on a bases-loaded walk to Nelson, who had four RBI’s on the night.
Three Takeaways
- The offense is still struggling overall
- Pitching was solid
- Defense is still an issue
The Noles only managed eight hits while continuing to struggle with runners on the bases. They stranded 11 runners on the night while striking out nine times.
FSU pitchers only yielded one earned run on the night, striking out 12 while allowing three walks. The first run USF scored was a lead-off walk in the first inning.
FSU hasn’t been able to play a clean game yet defensively. A crucial error with two outs in the third inning led to two unearned runs for the Bulls.
The team will likely struggle like this all season offensively as it’s something they have had issues with for several years. However, they have to find ways to be more productive with runners on the bases. I think pitching will be the strength of the team, and they can win some games if the defense can hold up their end of the deal.
The Noles return to action Friday at 6 p.m. at Dick Howser Stadium as they host the Cincinnati Bearcats for a three-game series.
