Alex Mastromanno

FSU football hasn’t had a good punter since Shawn Powell left the program nearly a decade ago. They’ve had a string of mediocre to decent punters in that time frame. Cason Beatty did eventually develop into a good punter by the time he was a senior.

He improved from 38 yards per punt as a freshman to 45 yards per punt as a senior. Once he exited the program Logan Tyler took over as a true freshman and averaged 40 yards per punt.

He improved his distance to 43 yards per punt the next two seasons but often lacked good hang-time. Tyler got himself into some off-the-field trouble last year and only appeared in one game before he was dismissed from the team.

That meant walk-on punter Tommy Martin had to step in and fill the void. He performed admirably in the first few games but saw his performances become less consistent over the season.

That’s where true freshman Alex Mastromanno comes into play. He’s never played American football before but he’ll be the only scholarship punter on the roster and has a rocket in his foot.

I’m not sure how far that is but I’m saying I’ll take a punt like that any day of the week. I know doing that in actual games is different, but special teams have been atrocious in the last few years. Having a solid punter could make a world of difference in how games play out.
