FSU football: Impact of Jeff Kupper being hired from Memphis
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU football head coach Mike Norvell continues to make additions to this staff in Tallahassee. I discuss the impact of Jeff Kupper coming from Memphis.
FSU football head coach Mike Norvell has nearly completed his on-the-field coaching staff but has been busy acquiring talent the field too.
He’s already hired Bruce Warwick as his Chief of Staff and now has hired an additional support staff behind the scenes in Jeff Kupper from Memphis.
Kupper was director of football operations at Memphis for nearly a decade. He’s been called the backbone of Memphis football and Mike Norvell spoke on some of his duties at Memphis after his first season as coach there.
From CommercialAppeal.com:
"“He’s in charge of all the operations of where we’re going, what we’re doing, a lot of the behind-the-scenes preparation,” Norvell said. “He’s involved in every aspect. And he does an incredible job. It’s a job that takes a great deal of energy, because it’s literally on-call, 24-7.”"
Kupper also had a hand in team travel, football camps and more. As we know, organization was not a strong suit of the last FSU football staff.
Now, it seems they have way more support staff on board according to the recent hires by Norvell.
Here’s more notes on folk from Memphis who are familiar with Kupper’s work at Memphis.
Thoughts
The fact Kupper is familiar with how Mike Norvell likes to have things done is big. It means he’ll likely be able to hit the ground running and could have an impact in putting together the last huge weekend in recruiting as National Signing Day approaches next month.
There were rumors recruiting visits by the last staff were not always well-organized. Some of that seemed to be pointed out by recruits who visited the last weekend prior to the Early Signing Period.
Any duty the head coach can delegate to someone responsible and trustworthy is a plus.
Kupper will be likely working hand-in-hand with the aforementioned Bruce Warwick. Having two guys with so much experience in the behind the scenes game should make things much smoother from football camps to recruiting visits to practice schedules.
