FSU football: 3 reasons Matt Campbell would be a risky hire

Likely Take A While To Turn Things Around

If Matt Campbell is hired I do think he could turn FSU football around and get them winning again. The biggest question is how long would it take?

I mentioned he wouldn’t be the splash hired needed, so the new coach bump in support and excitement wouldn’t be there. I do think he’s a good X’s and O’s coach but he has to have players to turn this thing around quickly.

It’s why I’d put James Franklin ahead of him as the best option as I think Franklin could change that narrative quicker on the recruiting trails.

What if Matt Campbell was hired in a week and FSU’s 2020 recruiting class finished at say No. 20 or worse?

It’s ranked No. 18 right now and I can’t imagine Campbell having much of an effect in improving that ranking if hired.

If we look at the teams Iowa State (7-4) has been in 2019 thus far it isn’t exactly an impressive list:

  • Northern Iowa (8-4) **FCS Win
  • Iowa (8-3) Loss
  • Louisiana-Monroe (5-6) Win
  • Baylor (10-1) Loss
  • TCU (5-6) Win
  • West Virginia (4-7) Win
  • Texas Tech (4-7) Win
  • Oklahoma State (8-3) Loss
  • Oklahoma (10-1) Loss
  • Texas (6-5) Win
  • Kansas (3-8) Win

Yes, Iowa State has been in the games they’ve lost against ranked teams, but they haven’t exactly beaten a murderer’s row of teams either. The seven teams they have beaten have a combined record of 35-43 which includes a FCS team’s record.

For every person that wants to point to Oklahoma only beating Iowa State by 1 point, they also only beat a five win TCU team by four points.

Are we just to assume because Matt Campbell’s teams play the likes of Oklahoma, Baylor and Iowa tough he’ll succeed at FSU?
