FSU football isn’t where everyone thought they would be after 11 games through the season. However, they are improving from where they were.

Through 11 games FSU football has finally cracked the top 50 when it comes to overall rankings in SP+ advanced metrics.

The Nole have done it by beating up two teams with awful defenses in Boston College and Alabama State.

FSU checks in at No. 48 with the No. 40 ranked offense and No. 62 ranked defense with the No. 93rd ranked special teams.

Of course that’s a fairly significant improvement over last year where they finished No. 71 overall with the No. 97 ranked offense and No. 37 ranked defense.

The crazy thing is FSU football was thought to have a better defense returning this year aside from its lack of pass rush. It didn’t have one last year outside of former first round pick Brian Burns.

The Noles will play Florida November 30th and will likely see some regression from these numbers as they will score points and likely limit what the Noles can do offensively.

Nevertheless, it’s still a solid improvement over a year ago overall despite failing to meet expectations this season.

The challenge is going to be how will the Noles replace the likes of Cam Akers, Marvin Wilson, Tamorrion Terry and Cory Durden as all of them could declare for the NFL Draft? Will they have  new offensive and defensive coordinators?

I think the latter will happen for sure or at least needs to. I’d like to see Kendal Briles get another year with a QB that he recruited to play in his system, but it will all depend on who the new coaching hire will be.

The fact Briles took an offense from No. 97 to No. 40 is enough to warrant another year. The offensive line should improve with another year under Randy Clements, and a who knows what will happen at quarterback with James Blackman and Jordan Travis eligible to return along with four-star QB commit Jeff Sims(if he sticks).
