FSU Football: Clock ticking on Willie Taggart to turn things around
By Jason Parker
FSU football has a worse record than they did through seven games last season – and the man in charge is on a short leash with many in the fan base.
I’ll be the first person to admit it: I have an unapologetic bias toward FSU football. As an alum of the school, I bleed garnet and gold and will trust those set to lead my school and my program – from Bobby Bowden to Willie Taggart, if you are in charge of the Seminoles I am going to give you my full support until you have proven you don’t deserve it.
I have seen those I thought were like that turn ugly toward the Seminoles and most recently Taggart in the past few seasons, watching fans turn ugly with every loss and even some resorting to being downright racist at the idea of Taggart being the first full time black head coach in the history of the Seminoles.
It’s something that makes me sick, to be honest, and let me say for the record that I am still standing beside the current leader for the FSU football team – for the moment. Because at this rate, things have got to change for Taggart if he wants to be the leader of the Seminoles much longer than this season.
Florida State Seminoles Football
While I personally think it would be crazy to fire Taggart for anything aside from a second straight losing season, I get that the dissension is real among a growing majority in garnet and gold – from those still delusioned by a national title in 2013 to the “good ole boys” who can’t handle the Seminoles being led by someone who isn’t their same skin color.
All the haters can be silenced when the Seminoles are 3-2 and looking on the way up – they can’t be ignored when the Seminoles are getting killed by Clemson and giving up another second half lead, losing their third game of the season in such a way with Saturday’s defeat to Wake Forest.
I am not waving the white flag on the season just yet – hell, the Seminoles should still be favored in at least three of their next four games and wins there mean they are going bowling. What I am saying is that things need to change ASAP with the FSU football team or the one change that will be taking place is at the top.
It won’t be fair to Taggart that he is going to be coaching a team where many of the fans and former players are still comparing everyone to a coach that hasn’t been there since 2009 and coached in a much different era – but that’s the danger he knew when he signed up to lead the Seminoles.
For the sake of the ‘Taggart Train’ and those of us still left on it, here’s hoping that the Seminoles find at least four wins the finish the regular season – because anything less is going to be just another piece of evidence in the Seminoles possibly searching for a new leader.
