Is FSU Soccer poised for national title repeat in 2019?
By Jason Parker
FSU Soccer got their eighth straight win over the weekend – and right now have a better record than the team who won the title last season.
When you look at the athletics programs surrounding the Florida State Seminoles this decade, it might be a surprise for some that the FSU soccer team has been the one that has brought home two national titles in the last five seasons of play – including winning their second title in program history during the 2018 season.
It might also be a surprise to some in garnet and gold that head coach Mark Krikorian’s team in 2019 actually has a better record through their first 12 games of the season than the one who claimed the top crown in women’s college soccer last season.
FSU soccer currently exits the weekend with a 10-2 record that includes an eight game winning streak that was increased to that number with a weekend win over ACC foe Pittsburgh in a Saturday afternoon showdown inside the Seminole Soccer Complex on campus.
The eighth straight win for the Seminoles brought their record to one game better at this point than it was through 12 games last season (when the Noles were 9-2-1) and completely erased any questions of how FSU soccer would do after two losses on the west coast to soccer powers UCLA and USC.
For the ladies in garnet and gold, it has been a season led by their superstars – namely Deyna Castellanos, who leads the team in goals scored and could arguably be the best women’s soccer player in college soccer at this point – as the Seminoles have dominated the second half of games this season, allowing just eight goals in the final 45 minutes and overtime this year.
FSU soccer still knows what the schedule has for them to finish the regular season – six ACC games that include perennial power North Carolina as well as teams like Virginia and Duke – and know they have the target on their backs from those who want to take the defending champs out.
But, if the Seminoles can continue their hot streak, the words “three time champs” might soon be associated with Castellanos and her teammates pretty soon.
