FSU football: Boise State to start true freshman QB against Noles
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU football now knows who Boise State will trot out on the field against them at QB next week. I give my thoughts on the news.
FSU football has put itself in a great position going into the 2019 season. There’s a lot of momentum with the program with a top 10 recruiting class.
They are relatively healthy going into the opener against Boise State and have experience at the quarterback position.
That’s something Boise State can’t say as they named true freshman Hank Bachmeier their starting QB to face FSU next week.
Bachmeier was an early enrollee and former four-star recruit and No. 235 player overall and the No. 6 pro-style quarterback in the 2019 recruiting class.
Thoughts
I’m sure Boise State coaches feel Bachmeier earned the job and gives them the best chance to win. However, I don’t think the news could have been any better for the Noles.
Their defense gets to go after a true freshman QB who’ll be playing on the road in his first college game ever. Historically, that’s usually a recipe for success for a defense.
The No. 1 goal for Harlon Barnett’s defenses is to stop the run and that will never be more true than next Saturday night. The goal will be to force Boise State to put the ball in the air, preferably after getting on the scoreboard first.
If the Noles are able to get up early, it’ll give them a real opportunity to pin their ears back and get after the quarterback. It’s also an opportunity to break in that 3-4 defense they’ve been practicing a ton.
That 3-4 defense could confuse Bachmeier as they can disguise more coverages or blitz from different areas.
This is great news for the Noles. If they can’t have success on defense in this game it’ll be a long season.
