Field Position

Ok, if you can’t consistently move the ball to get first downs and you’re starting with your heels on your own goal line?

That’s a recipe for disaster because you’re going to be punting from your own end zone given the opposing offense excellent field position.

Would you rather drive 50 yards to try to score or 75? The Noles had awful field position in almost every game and had a starting field position average of the 28 yard line.

Guess what makes that even worse?

A team that’s prone to turnovers. The Noles had 26 turnovers and 22 of them resulted in the opposing offense getting the ball on the FSU side of the field.

Listen, I don’t care how good the defense is they are not going to be able to hold up when constantly having to defend short fields.

The FSU defense wasn’t terrible but they had they backs against the wall in the red zone 58 times last season and surrendered a touchdown 57 percent of the time.

If the FSU offense can be efficient enough to get first downs, that will at least allow them to flip the field and force teams to drive 75-80 yards.

The defense will likely face fewer plays defending in the red zone if that’s the case as they were decent for the most part despite being on the field most of the game.
