FSU Baseball 2019 College World Series Preview: vs. Michigan
By Jason Parker
Here’s a preview of FSU baseball and their next game during the 2019 season.
For the 24th time in the program’s storied history – and the 17th time under their legendary head coach – the FSU baseball team is one of the eight teams in Omaha as part of the College World Series…and after the way things played out this weekend, the Seminoles have gone from one of the last teams in the field to a favorite to play for a national title.
After getting through the first two rounds of the NCAA tournament without a loss, the Noles found themselves locked in one heck of a pitcher’s duel to open play in the Midwest – and an odd series of events led to their only run and getting what turned out to be an all important win.
Now, as the final ride for legendary skipper Mike Martin continues, the FSU baseball team finds themselves just one win away from going all the way to last four teams into the field of play to one of the last four teams that is left standing.
Florida State Seminoles
Here’s our preview of this week’s game between the Seminoles and their foe during this week of action.
The Last Time The ‘Noles Took The Field
After four straight wins over nationally ranked teams from the SEC, the FSU baseball team found themselves facing yet another foe from that conference to open this year’s session in Omaha as they faced off against the Arkansas Razorbacks and their ace pitcher to start things off.
While Isaiah Campbell pitched seven innings of shutout baseball for the Hogs, it was the Seminoles’ Drew Parrish who did one better as he went eight innings on the mound and gave up just five hits and no runs while striking out nine batters in the process for the Noles.
With the game scoreless entering the ninth inning, leadoff hitter J.C. Flowers got on base after being hit by a pitch – and then, following a sequence that saw him advance on a fielder’s choice, a bunt for an out and a RBI sacrifice fly, Flowers pitched a shutout ninth inning to give the Seminoles a much needed 1-0 victory and advance in the winner’s bracket.
Opponent Preview
On Monday night, it will be a showdown for the Seminoles with a Michigan Wolverines team who they have a lot in common with – as both teams were among the last four that were selected for the field of 64 teams in this year’s tournament and have had an impressive road to get to this point.
For the men from Ann Arbor, their postseason run that continued with a shocking upset Super Regional win over top seeded UCLA continued to open the CWS on Saturday when they knocked off No. 8 national seed Texas Tech – winning the game 5-3 and holding off a Red Raiders rally that saw the game end with two runners on and the winning run at the plate for the men from Lubbock.
Interesting Fact
For this year’s FSU baseball team, much was made after the victory over Arkansas not just about the continuing win streak in the postseason for the Seminoles but also the fact it was the first time they opened a College World Series trip with a victory since the 1999 edition of the tournament.
That season, the Seminoles actually lost their second game played – dropping a decision to Stanford – before getting three straight wins, one over Cal State Fullerton and two over the Cardinal – in three straight days before dropping the title game to rival Miami.
