FSU Football: Coaches targeting trenches in recent recruiting offers
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU football still have several needs in its 2020 recruiting class. Their offers this weeks seem to be targeting the trenches.
I wrote a few weeks ago about how FSU football had met several needs in its 2020 recruiting cycle but needed to address things in the trenches.
In particularly I was referring to the defensive side of the ball with defensive tackles. The coaching staff had targeted all of the top recruits at that position as they should.
However, one of them committed to Georgia earlier this week and it seems the staff have expanded the board to a number of targets at defensive tackle.
They are still in the mix for four-star McKinnley Jackson as he has been a constant visiting Tallahassee all the way from Mississippi. However, they’ll need to get him on campus again soon to keep that possibility open.
Here’s a list of players the Noles have offered at defensive tackle in the last week or so:
Winfrey is a JUCO defensive tackle originally from Illinois who stands 6’4″ 305 pounds with 20 offers from the likes of Alabama, LSU, Kentucky, Miami, Oklahoma, Mississippi State, Penn State, Tennessee and others.
Newton is considered the No. 1,082 ranked player nationally and the No. 133 player in the state of Florida. He stands at 6’3″ 250 pounds and hold 21 offers as of today.
FSU will be competing with the likes of Miami, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, West Virginia, Boston College, Florida, Iowa, North Carolina, Virginia Tech and others.
Edwards is from Lexington, Mississippi, and is considered the No. 788 player nationally and No. 63 ranked defensive tackle. He stands 6’2″ 285 pounds and holds 23 offers from the likes of LSU, Mississippi State, Auburn, Florida, Kentucky, Louisville, Michigan and others.
Smith is from Shelbyville, Tennessee, and is considered the No. 828 ranked player nationally and No. 26 ranked player in that state. He’s 6’2″ 310 pounds and holds 15 offers from the likes of Duke, Kentucky, Ole Miss, South Carolina, Vanderbilt, Virginia Tech. The home state school Tennessee has not offered yet.
Thoughts
FSU football is in a good spot for 2020 defensive tackle in Emmanuel Rogers but likely need 2-3 defensive tackles this recruiting cycle depending on how things shake out with Marvin Wilson and Cory Durden.
The good news is the coaching staff isn’t waiting to offer players so late in the recruiting cycle as they did last year.
It’ll be imperative to get these targets on campus this summer on unofficial visits and then for official visits during the season. Oh, they also need to look a lot better on the field than last year.
They’ve already offered 229 players in the 2020 recruiting cycle compared to 227 the entire year last year.
