FSU Softball overcomes South Carolina to make Super Regionals
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU softball had to fight through some adversity but showed the heart of a champion to get past South Carolina to advance to the Super Regionals.
FSU softball (54-8) started Sunday’s game like all their games of late, and that’s scoring early and often putting pressure on the opposing team.
The Noles scored three runs in the top of the first as the away team even though they are playing at home (which is dumb).
South Carolina responded with a run in the bottom of the first off FSU pitching ace Meghan King.
However, the Noles responded with two more runs in the top of the second for a 5-1 lead which is usually enough for King to shut the door.
South Carolina touched King for two runs in the bottom of the third as she was uncharacteristically off her game.
Kathryn Sandercock came in to relieve her with 2.1 innings of work but was touched for three runs that gave South Carolina a 6-5 lead going into the top of the sixth inning.
However, Elizabeth Mason got things started with a lead off double with Dani Morgan drawing a walk afterwards.
Makinzy Herzog with a clutch two-out single gave the Noles the lead for good at 7-6.
Meghan King shook off her shaky outing to came back into the game to pitch the sixth and seventh innings to close the door on the Gamecocks.
Thoughts
The announcers kept talking about how well South Carolina played, but FSU softball probably played their “C” game and was able to come away with the win.
South Carolina had a ton of momentum coming out of the fifth inning and the Noles looked to be on shaky ground both defensively and offensively. However, the double by Mason seemed to ignite things with the emotion she showed on the clip and the Noles pulled through for the victory.
Super Regionals will begin May 23 with eight sites hosting games. Two teams play in a best-of-three tournament format with the winners from each site advancing to the NCAA Women’s College World Series.
