FSU Softball: Homerun barrage puts South Florida away in regionals
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU softball put on one of the most impressive home run displays in recent memory against USF in the NCAA Regionals.
FSU softball (53-8) moved another game closer to the NCAA Women’s College World Series with a 12-1 destruction of South Florida in the Tallahassee regional.
The Noles have done a great job of putting pressure on teams by scoring early and Saturday was no different.
FSU softball scored one run in the first, but it was the top of the third inning that saw the onslaught begin.
Makinzy Herzog blasted a grand slam to put the Noles up 6-0, but that was just the beginning as the Noles surpassed 100 homeruns on the season as a team and now lead the nation.
The Noles tacked on two more runs in the fourth inning to try to end the game, but South Florida was able to extend the game with a run in the bottom frame.
It was as if FSU wanted to punish the Bulls for the extension as the ladies hit back-to-back-to-back-to back homeruns to put the game away at 12-1.
Highlights
The crazy thing is the Noles were about five feet shy of five consecutive homeruns when Elizabeth Mason flew out deep to centerfield for the first out of the inning.
Meghan King stifled the Bulls for two innings striking out four of the six batters she faced. Kathryn Sandercock finished the game giving up two hits and the lone earned run while striking out two.
The ability to get the game over quickly is a plus as it allows the pitchers and starters the opportunity to rest while giving younger players the chance to get valuable experience.
FSU softball advances to the Tallahassee Regional finals where they’ll play Sunday at 12 p.m. ET.
