FSU baseball finishes the regular season in a three game series against the team with the best record in the conference this weekend.

For the final time in the 2019 regular season, the FSU baseball team will take the field this weekend for a three game series starting Thursday night – and who did the folks in the ACC think the Seminoles should finish things up against? Why, none other than a Louisville Cardinals team who right now is the best team in the conference.

Entering the final weekend of games, the Seminoles head up to the commonwealth of Kentucky as the sixth best team in the conference with a record of 34-18 overall and 16-11 in conference games. Technically, the Noles are tied with three other teams who have the same ACC record but tiebreakers send them down a notch.

Now, despite that previous paragraph that on the surface would have nothing but doom and gloom in it, there is still plenty of good news if you are a fan of the FSU baseball team: the Seminoles can still leave this weekend with the top record in the ACC.

I know there are some people out there who have started to laugh at that statement, but it is 100 percent true and here’s why.

First off, the Cardinals right now are sitting with a record of 19-8 in their ACC games – good enough for first place, but also good enough to get sent down a few spots if they can end up getting swept by the Seminoles this upcoming weekend.

Remember what happened the last time that FSU baseball played a regular season series at Louisville? Well, the Seminoles won the two games to finish that part of the schedule before sticking around and winning the ACC tournament that was played in the city.

For the Seminoles to entering the postseason tournament the following week with the best record in the conference if they sweep Louisville, things get a little bit tricky after that:

  • First off, FSU baseball would need the winner of the series between North Carolina and NC State to finish with a 2-1 record over the weekend as both teams have the same ACC record as the Seminoles do.
  • Second, the Noles need Georgia Tech – currently the top team in the Coastal Division – to lose two games this weekend against a Pittsburgh team who has the worst record in the conference at this point.
  • Finally, the Seminoles need the rival Miami Hurricanes – the fourth team with that 16-11 conference record – to lose at least one game this upcoming weekend against a Duke team that heads down to Coral Gables in the middle of the Coastal Division.

You see, that’s all it’s going to take for FSU baseball to head into Durham as the best team in the ACC at this point in the season!

Okay, I may have bitten off just a little bit more than I should have on this one, but the most important thing to take out of all this is that the conference remains wide open this coming weekend and the Seminoles still have plenty of things they can do to increase their standing.
