FSU Football: Demarcus Christmas selected during NFL Draft final day
By Jason Parker
FSU football sent their fans home somewhat happy during the final day of the 2019 NFL Draft when fans heard the name of one former Nole being called.
As the picks started to come to the final day of the 2019 NFL Draft, fans of the FSU football team were starting to wonder if a pick from all the way back in the first round – Brian Burns being taken No. 16 by Carolina – would be the only time that they would hear the name of a former Seminoles star bring picked during this year’s selection process.
All it took was close to two days and nearly 200 picks for the Seattle Seahawks to change all that when they selected defensive tackle Demarcus Christmas with the 209th pick in the sixth round of the NFL Draft.
For those in garnet and gold for FSU football, hearing Christmas’ name being called was a blessing in disguise after what looked like a bleak draft showing through the first 200 or so picks – one that say Burns being the only name called through the first part of the draft.
The first person with the last name Christmas to be selected by a pro team in the NFL Draft, the Sarasota native started in all but one of the 38 games during his final three seasons in Tallahassee – finishing his four seasons with the Seminoles with over 100 tackles and 3.5 sacks during that time.
His biggest season came in 2017, when he finished with a career high in both tackles (45) and tackles for a loss (4.5) during a season in which he helped the Seminoles win their final four games of the season to finish with a winning record and continue their streak of bowl game appearances.
The rest of the group that used to ride with Christmas on Saturdays during the fall will get back to work this coming August 31st when FSU football takes on Boise State in Jacksonville.
