FSU Baseball: Noles sweep Clemson for much needed wins
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU baseball had been in a major slump since Mike Martin got his 2,000th career win against Virginia Tech. The team woke up against Clemson.
FSU baseball had been shutout four times since that historic win against Virginia Tech. The team was in disarray and couldn’t field or hit a sack of balls if you threw them at them.
I wrote how they had over 25 errors over a 13 game stretch and averaged leaving over nine runners on base the past two seasons.
It all seemed to come together for the Noles against top 25 ranked Clemson. FSU averaged nine runs per game in the series sweep.
Noles pitching only allowed eight runs in the entire series. Fortunately the FSU bats woke because the fielding still left a lot to be desired.
The Noles committed five errors in the series and left 31 runners on base and still managed to sweep the No. 16 Clemson Tigers.
How’d They Do It?
FSU pitching only had six walks while striking out 36 batters and only yielding 18 hits the entire series.
The FSU offense only struck out 19 times while collecting 28 hits and 23 walks with the Clemson defense only having two errors in the series.
Thoughts
FSU baseball (22-13, 10-8 ACC) had to win the Clemson series if they wanted any shot of making the post season.
Their streak of 40 wins or more for over 40 seasons is likely in jeopardy unless they get incredibly hot and make a deep postseason run.
They have 19 regular season games left and the ACC Tournament and need 18 wins to reach 40 on the season.
The good news is aside from Louisville the rest of their ACC slate is against teams they have the talent to beat.
The question is will they ride this momentum gained from sweeping Clemson into postseason play?
