FSU baseball has won five of its last 13 ball games since Mark Martin captured win No. 2,000 against Virginia Tech. Errors on defense have been a huge culprit.

FSU baseball is coming a ACC conference series loss against the lowly Boston College Eagles on Sunday afternoon.

The Noles dropped the opener 7-10 and had to use a walk-off win in the bottom of the ninth to win the second game. The rubber game saw Boston College shut out the Noles with eight runs on 15 hits and that was with leaving 13 runners on base.

Pitching hasn’t been great either but one constant that’s been the same over the past couple of seasons is the ‘Noles defense

It has been one of they keys we’ve highlighted they need to improve to reach the College World Series. They’ve averaged over an error a game the past two seasons.

They did fairly well through the first month or so this year, but the wheels have come off as of late.

They have 31 errors through 27 games with their opponents having only committed 19 errors.

Through the last 13 games where they’ve gone 5-8 and the ‘Noles defense has committed 26 errors. They have five games in that stretch with three errors and three more with two errors, and there are NO games with no errors.

Listen, teams simply can’t afford to give opposing teams extra outs. A bad defense affects pitching too in a lot different ways. It makes pitchers feel they have to be too precise which results in more walks.

Of course walks are a recipe for disaster as well when a defense isn’t capable of consistently making the routine plays.

Boston College is a .500 baseball team and Notre Dame is worse than they are yet the Noles struggled to win that series as well.

This team needs to get it together if they want to have any shot of doing anything in the postseason. After all, we see how they got blasted against one of the better teams in the ACC in NC State.
