FSU Basketball: 3 takeaways from ‘Noles win over Notre Dame
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU basketball got a much needed win and avoided the letdown spot against Notre Dame. I look at three takeaways from the game.
No. 18 FSU basketball (22-6, 10-5 ACC) found a way to win against a team they should beat in Notre Dame (13-15, 3-12 ACC).
It wasn’t pretty and they were down late, but the ability to find a way to win is an improvement over earlier in the season when they lost to Duke and proceeded to lose the next two against inferior teams.
The Noles got down early by double digits before going on a 16-6 run to close the half and tie the game at 33-33.
Notre Dame jumped out to an eight point lead in the first five minutes of the second half. However, the Noles gradually climbed back into the game behind some strong play from Devin Vassell. A Vassell three-pointer at the 6:35 mark finally gave the Noles the lead 57-55.
The Noles would make some clutch free throws down the stretch and ultimately win 68-61.
Three Takeaways
- FSU didn’t let one loss(UNC) turn into two-That was my goal for the team going into the game. I figured they’d come out flat much like they did after losing to Duke earlier in the season. The fact this was a home game certainly helped and they got a win they absolutely needed to stay in contention for the fourth seed.
- Noles crushed Notre Dame On Boards-FSU was +14 overall and +7 on the offensive rebounds. It was a much better job than what they did against UNC just two days earlier.
- FSU had too many turnovers-The Noles had 14 turnovers against Notre Dame and that’s way too many. In fact, they had less turnovers against a much better defensive team in UNC.
Final Thoughts
Win by any means necessary against teams you should beat is the theme. FSU basketball has three games remaining and should be betting favorites in all of them.
The next two games are at home and they’ll finish the regular season on the road against a bad Wake Forest team.
If they win all three games they should be a lock to be a top four seed in the ACC Tournament and receive the double-bye.
They’ll host NC State Saturday, March 2 at 12 p.m. on ESPN2.
