FSU basketball got a huge ACC win over rival Miami Wednesday night in the Tuck Center. We discuss three takeaways from the game.

FSU basketball opened ACC play with a brutal three game stretch against Virginia, Miami and Duke.

Of course the Noles got smacked on the road against No. 4 Virginia Saturday, so this win against Miami was really important with game against No. 1 Duke coming up on Saturday.

It was a tightly contested game with the Noles going up by as many as eight points late in first half before settling for a 33-29 halftime lead.

The second half saw Miami grab the lead briefly about seven minutes into the second half before the Noles opened up a 13 point lead with about seven minutes left in the game.

However, sloppy play from FSU on four consecutive possession allowed Miami to make it a game down the stretch.

FSU ultimately won the game 68-62 although it was 64-62 with :29 seconds remaining in the game.

The Noles were led by David Nichols and PJ Savoy off the bench with 13 and 10 points respectively as none of the starters got into double figures.

It was the epitome of scrapping out a win as FSU only shot 42 percent from the floor and 23 percent from three-point land while only going to the free throw line 13 times.

Three Takeaways

  • Good Bounce Back Win– The Noles needed this win badly considering the early conference schedule. They are not expected to beat Virginia and Duke, so winning the games they are supposed to win is huge. It’s also great considering a couple of players are playing with injuries and are not 100 percent.
  • Rebounds/Turnovers-The Noles won the battle of the boards (+7 overall and +3 offensively) while only turning the ball over nine times.  Both of these ingredients are needed to win games in the ACC. The latter being a problem that seemingly has reared its head too many times against inferior competition.
  • Shooting-The Noles shooting has to improve moving forward. They shot 42.2 percent against Miami and 34.1 percent against Virginia. That’s a two game average of 38 percent. They are only shooting 25 percent from three-point range the past two games.

Overall, it was a good win against a good ACC opponent and of course it’s always good to beat Miami at anything.
