FSU soccer will again be playing for a shot at the national title after a second half goal got them to move on from the quarterfinals on Friday.

After a regular season where the FSU soccer team saw themselves seeded seventh in the ACC Tournament, the Lady Noles have gone into absolute beast mode in the last few weeks – winning three straight games to win the tournament before winning their first three games in the NCAA Tournament that included wins over two ranked teams.

After Friday, you can now make that FOUR straight wins in the NCAA tournament as the garnet and gold are again one of the final four teams standing in women’s soccer following a 1-0 victory over Penn State.

It was a first half that you would expect from two of the best teams left standing as the Nittany Lions out shot the Lady Noles 6-2 in the first 45 minutes with none of the shots finding the back of the net and keeping everything scoreless.

In the second half, FSU soccer got on the board in the 52nd minute when Denya Castellanos – arguably the best female soccer player at the college level in the entire world – sent one of her two shots on goal into the net for what turned out to be the only score needed for the Lady Noles.

Caroline Jeffers did all she had to in goal for FSU soccer and saved both the shots on goal by Penn State to help the garnet and gold advance to the College Cup next weekend in Cary, North Carolina for the 10th time in the program’s 20 overall appearance in the NCAA tournament and the first one since 2015.

The Lady Noles will face off against Stanford next Friday for a chance to make it to the December 2nd title game after the top seeded Cardinal defeated Tennessee to advance. The teams have met four times before – all coming in the NCAA tournament – with Stanford sending the Lady Noles home last year in the Sweet 16 round.

FSU soccer’s only win came in the semifinals of the College Cup in 2014 in route to the program’s first national title in a game played in Boca Raton, Florida.
