FSU Football: Notre Dame has mixed results when in green jerseys
By Jason Parker
FSU football will be seeing green when their foes from South Bend wear their special uniforms for the game – ones that haven’t always helped them.
Every week, the FSU football team reveals what uniform combination they are going to where for the next game – with this week seeing the Seminoles going with the all white uniform look with the gold helmet against Notre Dame, the same one they wore when shutting out the Fighting Irish in their last trip to South Bend back in 2003.
While there is no word if the decision was so they would blend in with the possible snow that may fall on Saturday night, their foes and host tried to one up them in promoting a special uniform for what is Notre Dame’s home finale and showcasing the horrible acting of head coach Brian Kelly in remaking a scene from Rudy (usually one of my favs, but not this week).
With that, the Fighting Irish will be going green for the game – the first time they have worn the look at home since the 2007 season when they lost 38-0 to USC.
Now, we’ve talked more about uniforms this season alone than any other FSU football season in recent memories as this will be the sixth different uniform look the Seminoles have worn in the 10 games played this year alone.
However, there are some in the Notre Dame camp who are not all that happy about the choice of uniform for this week’s game. Why, you may ask? Well, since re-introdcing the look into their closet back in 1983, the Fighting Irish are just 8-6 in games involving green on their uniform.
The origin of the green goes back to 1977, when Joe Montana and Notre Dame thumped USC in the green unis in route to a national title. While they wore them exclusively for several seasons after, they went away for years until breaking out the look again for a game again against the Trojans in 1983.
When it comes to the team wearing green uniforms, the record stands at 6-5 (with a 2-1 record in white uniforms with green numbers) with four of those wins coming since Brian Kelly took over before the 2010 season – the last one being in 2015 when they were worn for a game against Boston College played at Fenway Park.
What does this all mean? Probably nothing because a uniform won’t put points on the board or help FSU football play their best game of the season – but if it does something to give the Seminoles a slight advantage by getting in the heads of their opponent, we’ll take that.
