Willie Taggart should be commended for handing off play calling duties

Willie Taggart has realized something in nine games that Jimbo Fisher could never figure out. We discuss why he should be commended for handing off play calling duties to Walt Bell.
Willie Taggart said he realized his team needed him in other areas and that’s why he allowed FSU offensive coordinator Walt Bell to take over play calling duties against NC State Saturday.
Head coaches calling offensive plays takes a ton of their attention off other areas of the team. It’s time-consuming to try to stay a step ahead of what’s happening on the field and it’s even more difficult when you want to run up tempo.
I think everyone was surprised when it became apparent Willie Taggart wasn’t calling plays Saturday. He made it clear several times prior to the season beginning that he would be doing so.
It’s kinda like the old saying, “When you allow your ego to control your thoughts, everything you believes comes an illusion.”
Taggart said, “We have a fragile football team that’s been through a lot over the last two years. I think our football team needed me in other areas than where I was and so I want to make sure I’m giving my time and effort to our football team and our coaches.”
Thoughts
It says a lot about Coach Taggart to relinquish that control when he was clear he would be calling the offensive plays.
I think it points to a greater understanding of what’s important to this team in particular as I’m not aware of him ever giving up play calling duties as a head coach before.
It also points to him believing there’s a lot of work still left to do in changing the culture of this football team.
This also speaks to the working relationship he’s developing with FSU offensive coordinator Walt Bell who had the Noles averaging 6.5 ypp against NC State.
This isn’t something we’ll be able to point to as having an impact on any one particular incident, but I think it’s refreshing to see a coach evaluate priorities with a formative assessment and make an informed decision on what’s best for his program.
