Former FSU tight end and national champion Nick O’Leary has found a new home in the state of Florida.

We try to keep FSU football fans up to date on former players in the NFL as much as we can. One Nole favorite found a new home when Nick O’Leary was promoted the Miami Dolphins 53 man roster.

O’Leary was promoted to the main roster a week ago and saw action in his first game when the Dolphins took on the Cincinnati Bengals in a 27-17 losing effort.

He didn’t catch any passes but had a number of good blocks in the running game, accounting for 28 offensive snaps while playing in a three man rotation.

O’Leary was released just before the regular season began by the Buffalo Bills, the team that drafted him in the sixth round of the 2015 NFL Draft.

He was signed by the Dolphins’ practice squad three weeks later before being promoted to the active roster October 5th.

It was surprising the Bills cut O’Leary who was coming off his most productive season in the NFL. He finished the 2017 season with 22 receptions for 322 yards and two touchdowns.

His previous career high for receptions was nine in 2016. O’Leary has always thought to be more of a pass catching tight end but has never shied away from contact.

FSU fans will remember him trucking Clemson defender Travis Blanks in FSU’s 2013 destruction of the Tigers in Death Valley.

Thoughts

It’s great to see O’Leary get another shot in the NFL when he was coming off his best season yet. He’s dealt with injuries and an offense in Buffalo that was terrible for the most part and wasn’t able to take advantage of things he brought to the table.

At least Miami has a competent quarterback in Ryan Tannehill, but otherwise have struggled to put points on the board the last few years.

Here’s to hoping O’Leary can get some shine near his hometown and play there for a number of years.
