This might have been the one that had most people scratching their heads – and that is not meant to disrespect a very good Longhorns team that was coached by former FSU football player Mack Brown. The problem comes with the reasoning that ESPN used, saying that they are the best because Vince Young was the best player of the era and because they beat USC that season.

First off, one game does not give you enough reason to say that they were the best team – that would be like the Seminoles saying “hey, we blew out third ranked Clemson so we’re the best.” As a whole, the Longhorns finished with the second ranked offense that season but had the 14th ranked defense – well below what the Seminoles did during their title year.

The Longhorns played two teams ranked in the top seven, just like the Noles, and averaged just a 19 point margin of victory against those foes that included just a three point comeback victory over Ohio State (remember, the Seminoles beat Clemson by 37 points and Miami by 27 points).

While Vince Young will be in the conversation as one of the best college football players in the history of the game, he faced just four of the top 50 defenses in the FBS that season while FSU football and Jameis Winston played six in the top 50 their season. Like we said, one game doesn’t make a season and the 2013 Seminoles would have shown them that.
