There is a common argument among many recent college football fans that the team of Hurricanes that was the last relevant team to come out of Coral Gables was the best to play the game – but the argument that is used has nothing to do with what took place during the 2001 season.

Miami fans talk about all the talent from that team who went on to the NFL – a fact that can not be argued because of the sheer number of players that went on to the next level (31 drafted into the NFL as opposed to 21 from the FSU football team.) But this isn’t an argument about “who is the best team to produce NFL players”, it’s about who was the best during the college season.

While the Hurricanes did do work against ranked teams they played, not one of them in the regular season was ranked in the top 10 (the only top 10 team they would play is Nebraska in the title game) while the Seminoles won their games against top seven ranked teams by an average of 32 points a game.

In the 2001 season, the ‘Canes and Noles had a common opponent when Miami held off Virginia Tech for a two point victory while FSU football dominated the Hokies in the Gator Bowl that season.

Miami’s offense in 2001 finished eighth nationally while the defense finished sixth – so while this would be the closest of the three games most likely, the Seminoles would still come out on top.
