FSU baseball has one more season to capture that elusive College World Series title for Mike Martin as he goes into his final year in Tallahassee.

FSU baseball failed to meet expectations in 2019 but did accomplish quite a bit in a turbulent season.

The Noles lost one of their best players in Tyler Holton in the first game of the season and faced one of the toughest schedules in the nation.

They won the ACC Baseball Tournament for the second consecutive season for the first time ever and continued their streak of 40+ wins in a season. Coach Mike Martin became the all time career wins leader with a big win against Clemson.

Yet, with all those things accomplished, an 0-2 finish in the Tallahassee Regional made the season look like an absolute failure.

The Noles will have one more season to help Mike Martin put the cherry on top of his legendary career and Baseball America thinks the Noles will be in position to make that become reality.

They’ve named FSU baseball as one of eight teams predicted to make the College World Series in 2019.

"Florida State has some big pieces to replace, including All-American catcher Cal Raleigh and starters Andrew Karp and Cole Sands. But it returns toolsy third baseman Drew Mendoza, who has the potential to be one of the best players in the country, and a talented group of rising sophomores, which includes outfielder Reese Albert and righthander C.J. Van Eyk. Joining that group is shortstop Nander De Sedas, who figures to be one of the highest ranked position players to make it to campus."

Thoughts

The Noles have lost a lot and they didn’t mention Tyler Holton who could have returned to FSU baseball if he wanted, but opted to sign after getting drafted.

The Noles will have the same three areas to improve upon as we spoke going into the 2018 season. They have to find a way to get better defensively as they commit way too many senseless errors which lead to second chances for teams to score.

We all saw how that worked out for Arkansas against Oregon State right?

FSU continues to leave way to many runners on the base paths as they averaged over eight runners stranded per game.

The Noles also have to do a better job of getting elite pitchers on the roster. I don’t know if they’ll have enough talent on the roster to get it done for Mike Martin in his final season.

It’s going to take improvement in all of those areas and a couple underclassmen to take that next step, but it’s always great to be in the conversation.
