FSU Olympic sports have monster day of ACC titles, NCAA victories
By Jason Parker
FSU had a day to be proud of all their athletic programs as two brought home ACC Championships and another had a huge win in the NCAA tournament.
While many people in the FSU family are counting down the days until the football season gets underway – while also hoping this is the season the baseball team finally breaks through the ‘0 for Omaha’ slump – several of the team’s Olympic sports programs had a monster day on Saturday that included bringing a couple trophies back to Tallahassee.
FSU Men’s Track and Field
For the fourth time in the last six seasons, the men’s team for the Seminoles are champions of the ACC in outdoor track and field. The Seminoles scored 116 points, outpacing Syracuse (108) and two time defending champs Virginia Tech (105.5) to win the title this weekend on the campus of the University of Miami.
Andre Ewers was the MVP for track events as he came up with wins in both the 100 meter and 200 meter races – as the Lauderhill native was able to win in front of family and friends just miles from his hometown.
It’s a clean sweep for the men’s team, who also won the ACC outdoor track and field title earlier this season. The women’s team finished in third place with 102.5 points, behind champions Miami (117) and second place Virginia Tech (111). Both teams will now prepare for the NCAA East regionals later this month.
FSU Softball
After winning their sixth straight regular season ACC championship earlier in the month, the Seminoles were on the ropes in the conference tournament title game on Saturday against an upstart Pittsburgh Panthers team looking to keep Florida State from winning a fifth straight tournament title.
Entering the final inning down three runs, the Noles got one back and had two runners on with two outs. Catcher Anna Shelnutt came through in the clutch with the game winning three run blast that brought another title back home.
FSU will now wait to find out where they will be seeded in the NCAA Tournament – more than likely as one of the eight national seeds, meaning they will play at home until a potential trip to the Women’s College World Series.
FSU Women’s Tennis
Maybe the only thing better than winning a conference title in front of your rival’s fans is pulling off an upset over your rivals in their home stadium. That’s just what happened when the Seminoles upset the No. 9 seed Florida Gators – their second win of the season over their bitter foes.
FSU will now head to Winston-Salem, North Carolina this Thursday for the second Sweet 16 game in program history when they face off with Tulsa – with a win sending them to the Elite Eight next Saturday against either the top seeded Vanderbilt Commodores or the No. 16 seed Miami Hurricanes.
The FSU men’s team, who came into Saturday with a 28-4 record that included victories over Wake Forest when they were ranked No. 1 as well as defeating Florida and being ranked No. 11, saw their season come to an end when they lost to Alabama in the second round – just the Noles’ second loss at home this season.
