FSU football will field one of the most talented rosters in college football but a lot of people are forgetting that because of last year’s dumpster fire season.

FSU football is coming off its worse season since the final year with Bobby Bowden. Ironically, 2017 mirrored that season quite a bit.

Both teams lost to rival Miami and started the season well under .500 and needed late season rallies to reach six win to become bowl eligible.

Both teams were led by freshmen quarterbacks with redshirt freshman EJ Manuel in 2009 and true freshman James Blackman in 2017.

The 2009 team went onto win its bowl game against West Virginia to finish (7-6) with the 2017 doing the same in their bowl game against Southern Mississippi.

In 2010, FSU brought in Jimbo Fisher as new head coach and they proceeded to finish that season (10-4).

However, one of the biggest differences in that 2010 and this 2018 team is the amount of talent present on the roster compared to then.

The Noles played a fairly difficult schedule in 2010 and the same will hold true in 2018. Preseason rankings had FSU football checking in at No. 20 in the 2010 preseason polls.

A USA Today writer released their post-spring preseason top 25 Tuesday and didn’t include the Noles on his list. Here are some noteworthy spots from the list:

  • Clemson-No. 1
  • Alabama-No. 2
  • Miami-No. 10
  • Boise State-No. 14
  • Florida Atlantic-No. 17
  • Virginia Tech-No. 18
  • Mississippi St.-No. 21

However, his reasoning makes little to no sense as was his synopsis of Virginia Tech at No. 18:

"Tech slides seven spots from its January ranking amid some concerns over how well the Hokies can replace some defensive stars now off in the NFL.Biggest question: The defense needs to find some playmakers along the front seven and particularly at linebacker."

Thoughts

First things first, it’s a preseason ranking that doesn’t mean anything but I thought it was interesting he waited until after spring practice concluded to issue his rankings.

It was smart to wait because the picture should be more clear about teams in April than in January. However, as he mentioned, Virginia Tech lost a lot from its team and will be breaking in a new quarterback.
