FSU baseball will have to wait another week to see if they can get head coach Mike Martin his next win to becoming the all time leader in college baseball.

It was all sitting right there for FSU baseball on Sunday inside of a warm Dick Howser Stadium. The Seminoles took the first two games of their annual series with the rival Miami Hurricanes – winning the first two games by a combined score of 12-1 and were all set to get a series sweep on Sunday that would have been historical win.

A victory over the Canes would have not just been big because it would have continued Miami’s struggles – coming into the final game with a record of 17-25 – or because it would have been  great goodbye for Miami’s head coach and longtime cheater Jim Morris in his final season, but because it would have made FSU head coach Mike Martin the sport’s wins king.

Alas, it was not meant to be as the Seminoles didn’t just lose their chance at a sweep – they almost got run out of the stadium before a late comeback attempt made the 11-5 defeat look a lot better than it actually was for FSU baseball.

Now, fans of the Noles as well as the players and Martin himself must wait until next Saturday – no midweek games due to final exam week on campus – for the next chance…on the road…against the Clemson Tigers.

Yay.

Don’t get me wrong, it is going to be a big deal no matter when and where it takes place. That being said, the storyline was right there for the taking – Martin gets the record setting win in front of the home crowd against the hated rival he got his first win against and has had decades of battles with in Coral Gables, Tallahassee and Omaha in a season when Miami is playing their worst baseball in decades. This could have been the dagger in the collective heart of Morris and his team.

Now, the next chance is going to come in the state of South Carolina against a team right now in first place in the ACC’s Atlantic Division and has a three game overall lead over the Seminoles – a place where the Seminoles have not won a series in since the 2008 season.

If the Tigers can pull off the sweep this coming weekend, the remaining games all are in Tallahassee – a midweek game with Jacksonville to go along with series against Mount St. Mary’s and N.C. State, the other team ahead of the Seminoles in the division.

So, to recap, the last chances in the regular season are against tough teams or teams that don’t really deserve to be a part of this history. Look, FSU baseball is not going to lose their last 10 games of the season and Martin is going to get his record at some point.

It just feels like something that could have been more of a story for the ages if it took place this weekend – a story that would have been told for the ages by the FSU baseball family.
