FSU Baseball: Mike Martin breaking wins record vs. Miami would be amazing
By Jason Parker
FSU baseball got a sweep last weekend – and now could get their head coach the all-time wins record against a team he has been known to dislike.
In just three more wins, longtime FSU baseball coach Mike Martin will do something that has taken 39 seasons to accomplish – become the all time winningest head coach in the history of college baseball. If the Seminoles win their next three games, Martin would get his record on Saturday at home against – yep, the longtime rival Miami Hurricanes.
Now, while the Seminoles have always had longtime rivalries with both the Canes and the Florida Gators, who the hatred is more toward can chance by sport. Football in the 1980’s was Miami while the 90’s leaned more toward Florida. In basketball, it has traditionally been the Gators – while Martin has made it clear that Miami is FSU baseball’s biggest rival.
In 1980, Martin got his first ever managerial win for the Seminoles when Florida State avoided a sweep with a February 24th victory over Miami and then head coach (and former FSU pitcher) Ron Fraser at Mark Light Field. Since then FSU baseball has watched their rival bring home four national titles (including a 1999 win over the Noles) while Florida State remains 0 for Omaha.
Martin and current Miami head coach Jim Morris, who is coaching his final season in Coral Gables, are not even close to being friends. It dates back to the early 2000’s when Martin, who gave Morris an assistant coaching job with FSU baseball in the 1980’s, believed that Miami was stealing signs using walkie talkies and other technology. Since then, the relationship has been ice cold.
So, wouldn’t it be nice for Mike Martin – after 39 seasons of facing the Hurricanes in Tallahassee, Coral Gables, Omaha and points in between – to get the all time win record against a team he clearly dislikes more than the rest? Wouldn’t it be great to add to Miami’s misery this season as they sit 17-22 on the year and at risk of failing to make the postseason for a second straight year?

Honestly, Mike Martin and FSU baseball would have liked to have gotten this out of the way a lot sooner. Dropping two to Georgia Tech, three to Florida and two to Duke didn’t help along the way – but now, it has set up for a storyline like none other…getting the first and historical wins against a team the Seminoles can’t stand on the diamond.
