FSU recruiting has slowly been laying the groundwork for an excellent 2019 class and beyond.

FSU recruiting just got a huge boost with the commitment of four-star quarterback Sam Howell who becomes the first QB commit of the Willie Taggart era.

Howell is ranked as the No. 152 player nationally and No. 4 pro-style QB, but he’s more of a dual threat quarterback than pro-style while also being an Elite 11 finalist.

He hails from Sun Valley HS out of North Carolina which is just outside Charlotte and is the No. 4 ranked player in the state.

All of those are composite rankings as you if you’ve read the site before.

This is a huge get for Willie Taggart and company, but most of the credit has to be given to FSU offensive coordinator Walt Bell.

Video Highlights

Bell was the first to offer Howell while he was the offensive coordinator at Maryland, and that relationship has continued with Bell’s move to FSU with Howell visiting Tallahassee recently.

Howell is comparable to someone like Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield, a shorter QB with a strong arm and the ability to make plays with his legs. Howell also plays baseball similar to how Jamies Winston did coming out of high school.

It’s quite possible he may be interested in playing both baseball and football in college, but that remains to be seen.

Thoughts

He’s the sixth commitment of the 2019 class and a great get for the staff in this recruiting cycle with FSU recruiting not taking a QB commit in 2018.

Actually, it will not be a surprise if FSU adds a second QB to the recruiting class at this point to continue to improve its depth at the position with only three scholarship QB’s on the roster.

FSU recruiting always did well in North Carolina under the old regime and there are a couple of players in that state ranked in the composite top 100.

Getting Howell’s commitment could be big if FSU sees those guys as viable targets moving forward. Welcome to Nolenation Sam Howell!
