FSU Womens Basketball NCAA 2nd Round Preview: vs. Buffalo
By Jason Parker
Here’s a preview of FSU women’s basketball and their upcoming game scheduled for play during the 2018 NCAA basketball tournament.
For the first ten minutes of action this weekend, the FSU women’s basketball team looked like they might get a battle in their NCAA tournament opener inside the friendly home court of the Tucker Center – but then, the second quarter started and the Seminoles coasted to yet another first round win.
Now, head coach Sue Semrau’s team prepares to get back on the court Monday evening against a team that pulled off the March Madness upset in their opening game – which makes the path slightly easier for the Seminoles to get back to the Sweet 16 and continue their road toward a first ever Final Four appearance.
Here’s our recap of the last game’s action and a preview of what’s ahead for the Seminoles.
Last Game Recap
Semrau and the Seminoles welcomed the 14th seeded Arkansas Little Rock Trojans into town for a morning opener – and FSU basketball played liked they spent too much time on Tennessee Street in the opening quarter, struggling at times and only having a seven point lead after the first frame.
After that, the Noles woke up and dominated the rest of the game – including a 24-7 run in the third quarter – and coasted to a 91-49 victory. Shakayla Thomas led the way with 26 points for Florida State while Chatrice White had a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds in the game as the Seminoles shot nearly 60 percent from the field for the game.
Opponent Preview
For the first time in history, the women’s basketball team for the Buffalo Bulls can say they have a NCAA tournament victory – and they did so in convincing fashion as the No. 11 seed rolled over the No. 6 seeded USF Bulls on Saturday afternoon, winning 102-79 behind 36 points from Cierra Dillard.
For the season, Buffalo stands at 28-5 which included winning the Mid-American Conference East Division title before losing in the conference tournament title game to Central Michigan. Dillard leads the Bulls in averaging nearly 16 points a game while three other players average in double figures as well.

Interesting Fact
While this will be the first ever meeting between the FSU women’s basketball team and the ladies from western New York, it will actually be just the second time the Seminoles and Bulls have played – in any sport. The only other meeting between the Noles and Buffalo came when the men’s team cruised to a 95-68 win during the 2012-13 season.
