FSU Football destroys Delaware State for huge homecoming win
By Jason Parker
FSU Football tied a school record for most points score in the first half as they dropped 56 on the Hornets in the lopsided win for the Seminoles.
The level of competition wasn’t the same as the first nine games of the season, but FSU football played their best game of the season stat wise as they found the end zone eight times in the first half alone – with a combination of passing, rushing, defensive and special teams scores – en route to a 77-6 victory over FCS foe and everyone’s favorite cupcake, the Delaware State Hornets.
The action starts when the Seminoles marched down the field and got into the end zone on a 14 yard run from Jacques Patrick, one of his two touchdowns in the first half.
From there, the defense and special teams did their part as Tarvarus McFadden returned a blocked field goal attempt for a 63 yard touchdown return – and after the Hornets scored their first points of the game, Derwin James found his way into the end zone with a 41 yard pick six from Derwin James.
Freshman Cam Akers would add a touchdown while his fellow first year player, quarterback James Blackman, went 11 of 15 in the first half for 179 yards and three touchdowns which included one each to Nyqwan Murray, Gabe Nabers and the last one to a leaping Auden Tate in the end zone to get FSU football over 50 points in the first half.
On senior day, with both teams agreeing to 10 minute quarters in the second half, running back Ryan Green found his way into the end zone twice and JJ Cosentino found Justin Motlow – the first member of the Seminole Tribe to play for FSU – to get the Seminoles over 70 points for the first time since putting 80 on Idaho in the 2013 season.
The defense for the Seminoles held the Hornets to just 192 yards, including just 15 on the ground, for the entire game and holding them to just six first downs. Another highlight came from wide receiver and punt returner D.J. Matthews, as the freshman returned five punts for an average of nearly 28 yards a kick – including a 47 yarder before the half.
Next: Why FSU football may not be as bad as stats imply
The Seminoles will now turn their attention to next weekend and the annual rivalry game with the Florida Gators, needed a win to keep their hopes alive to extend their bowl and winning season streaks.
