FSU football must win their last three games to make it back to a bowl game – starting with a game against one of the worst FCS teams there is.

I need all fans of FSU football to come a little closer to your computer screen, smart phone or device and read the following sentence – because it’s something in all my years of being a fan, student, graduate and journalist never thought I would ever see when it comes to the Seminoles and their on field performance:

Florida State faces a must win situation over a FCS team, as a loss means they will have the first losing season since 1976 and won’t make a bowl game for the first time since 1981.

Just let that sink in for a moment. Right now, FSU football is the only one of the FBS Big Three schools in the state of Florida who has never loss to a FCS opponent since the subdivisions (once called Division 1-A and 1-AA) split prior to the 1978 season. Miami lost to FAMU inside of Doak Campbell Stadium back in 1979 while Florida lost to Georgia Southern back in 2013.

In their previous 22 meetings with 1-AA / FCS schools, the Seminoles have almost always dominated – including holding teams to 10 points or less in 18 of those meetings. Without sounding cocky, there is very little chance they will lose to a Delaware State Hornets team who has won just five games over the past four seasons (a total record of 5-39 over that span).

That being said, with a season that even the most pessimistic of FSU football fans would have imagined taking place right now, nothing can be taken for granted. At 3-6 on the season following another game that had a shot of winning last week against Clemson, the Seminoles are not in a position where they can take anyone for granted.

In reality, this weekend’s game against the Hornets is the definition of a no-win situation situation for the Noles. Despite having just one more win than their foes, the Seminoles are a much more athletic team and should still win in a convincing way – at least it looks that way on paper. While Florida State fans might disagree, the general consensus is that anything less than a 40+ win is a disappointment.

Now, should the unthinkable happen and the Hornets get the win? Well, you’re looking at not just the most humiliating loss in Jimbo Fisher’s tenure or FSU football history – but it would be even worse than what the Canes and Gators did (FAMU was the defending I-AA champs while Georgia Southern was making the move to the FBS the following season.)

The Seminoles should be okay and more than likely will come out on top this weekend in the next to last home game of this season to forget – but the fact that we have to write the word “should” in that sentence might be the saddest thing of all during the 2017 football season.
