Conclusion

The perception among the fan base is any time there’s a third down and long for opposing offenses it’s going to be converted into a first down.

So, I went back and looked through every game this season to check and see how many times a team has converted on third and long.

Third and long is anything seven yards or more in this case and here’s what we have. There have been 62 times the FSU defense has forced a third and 7 or longer on the season.

Opposing teams have converted the first down 23 times which equates to 37 percent of the time. Those teams got 10 or more yards 20 times out of 23 times they converted third and 7 (86.9 percent).

So opposing teams are converting third and 7 at a higher percentage than FSU is allowing as a whole on third down on the season (35.71 percent going into the Syracuse game).
