College Football Playoff predictions – Week 9

facebooktwitterreddit

The first college football playoff rankings of the 2017 season come out tonight at 7 p.m. on ESPN. Chop Chat will be bringing you our weekly predictions.

The playoff committee will release their first top 25 of the season tonight and FSU will unfortunately not be apart of the show. However, it will still be interesting to see what the committees first college football playoff rankings look like.

The committees formula:

  • Strength of schedule
  • Eye test
  • Common opponents
  • Head-to-head
  • Conference champs

There is still a long ways to go to perfect this new college football playoff system. The above formula is a good platform to build off of when selecting the teams.

There is no formula written in stone for the following predictions. We will simply pick who we believe are the best four teams right now. So lets get to it.

Zack’s picks:

  1. Georgia (8-0)
  2. Alabama (8-0)
  3. Notre Dame (7-1)
  4. Ohio State (7-1)

First two out: 5. Clemson (7-1) and 6. Oklahoma (7-1)

Jason’s picks:

  1. Georgia – The road win against Notre Dame, at this point, might be the best win for the unbeaten teams.
  2. Alabama – They would be the top team, but that opening loss to Florida State doesn’t look so sexy now.
  3. Notre Dame – Some might put them higher, but I think unbeatens always win out over one loss teams, even if that loss is by a point to the top team.
  4. Oklahoma – Yes, they lost to Iowa State, but they have a great win among the one loss teams when they beat Ohio State.

First two out: No. 5 Ohio State and No. 6 Penn State (7-1)

Kelvin’s picks:

1. Alabama – Bama hasn’t been tested aside from a FSU team at full strength in the opener. They stay No. 1 until they lose.
2. Georgia – UGA is looking impressive at that win over Notre Dame early in the year looks even better now.
3. Notre Dame – Aside from the loss to UGA in the second game of the year these guys have been rolling…beating a good NC State team last week.
4. Clemson – Clemson likely is still undefeated if Kelly Bryant doesn’t get hurt against Syracuse. But they did lose so I have them here.
First two out: No. 5 Penn State and No. 6 Oklahoma

The committee is known for being inconsistent with their formula when it comes to their rankings. For example, last season Penn State was left out and Ohio State got in. Although Penn State won the head to head matchup and were conference champions that was not enough in the committees eyes.

The formula varies from week to week. As do the rankings depending on outcomes of the games. The playoff picture tonight will certainly not be the same playoff picture come December.

Let us know on twitter or in the comment section what you think about our picks and if  you agree or not. As previously mentioned, Chop Chat will be bringing you predictions each Tuesday before the committees selections are announced so be sure to follow along.
