FSU Football: Can Tarvarus McFadden find his form this season?
By Jason Parker
FSU football had a stud cornerback last season in Tarvaurs McFadden – but the junior has gone back to giving up big plays and not picking off passes.
After arriving in Tallahassee as a five star recruit from South Florida before the 2015 season, cornerback Tarvarus McFadden finished his freshman season for FSU football with just four tackles and no interceptions. He would dwarf both of those numbers through the first four games of his sophomore campaign and make the country know who he is.
McFadden would finish the season with a total of just 19 tackles – a product of early season woes that came with giving up the big play at the start of the year – but he more than made up with it by snatching up eight interceptions while winning the Jack Tatum Award as the top cornerback, while buckling down and avoiding the big mistake toward the end of the year.
Now, with half of the 2017 schedule done, McFadden has come up with 12 tackles – five in the opener against Alabama, five against Wake Forest and two against Duke – while not being able to intercept one pass so far this year. At the same time, he has been the cornerback responsible for several big plays this season, including the winning touchdown for Miami over a week ago.
Everyone knew it was going to be harder for him to match the number of interceptions last year, but the fact he hasn’t gotten one yet this season as some fans wondering what is wrong with the FSU football cornerback at this point.
It’s not that 2016 was a one year wonder moment for McFadden, but more an indication that he still has ups and downs to work through if he wants to be an elite college cornerback before his time with the Seminoles is done. With No. 4, FSU football fans are getting either the best of the best – or someone that looks like he can’t compete with average ACC receivers.

After what he did last year, quarterbacks aren’t going to throw his direction much either. That’s where it is on McFadden to get involved and make those plays even when he is not the target. The talent is there – now it’s time to keep it consistent.
