Earlier this morning FSU football missed out on the nations No. 1 QB and No. 1 overall recruit of 2018, Justin Fields. Earlier this morning Fields verbally committed to UGA.

UGA earned Fields commitment over FSU, Auburn, and Alabama. Justin Fields has only taken three visits to Florida State’s campus. 2017 is shaping up to be a season to forget for FSU football fans.

This is a tremendous loss for FSU. Talented quarterbacks such as Justin Fields do not come along often. It was announced last night that he would make his decision today. The day before Florida State’s biggest recruiting game of the season. Thats when the red flags went up and didn’t look good for FSU.

What went wrong?

FSU did not make the five-star quarterback a priority until this past spring. The ‘Noles were late to the party from the beginning.

The Seminoles were trending up for Fields this summer and had multiple visits from him. However, despite the talented roster FSU has they have looked like one of the worst couched teams in the country. Losing to Alabama, NC State, and their only win thus far was at Wake Forest in ugly fashion. Due to those circumstances Fields clearly lost interest in FSU.

Florida State has failed to get Fields back on campus since the season started. FSU’s QB coach Randy Sanders did visit Justin the week FSU was originally supposed to play Miami. Meanwhile Fields has taken numerous visits to Georgia as of late.

Jimbo’s history with getting quarterbacks drafted early in the NFL was obviously not enough and rightfully so. Trickett’s offensive line may have very well scared Fields away as well. Not too many quarterbacks enjoy taking a beating week in and week out.

What’s next for FSU?

Next up on Florida State’s list of QB targets is not yet clear. Regardless of who they prioritize next though this miss should be a huge learning lesson for the staff.

What makes this such a loss for FSU is that Fields was not only a special talent but he would have certainly brought in other talented recruits with him. Georgia will definitely  see a positive ripple effect now that they have Fields.

If Florida State happens to lose this Saturday to Miami it could potentially deliver another blow to FSU’s recruiting. The ‘Noles must win this game and the staff certainly needs to regroup and figure this thing out.
