The 2017 FSU football season may be the most challenging of Jimbo Fisher’s head coaching career in Tallahassee – and we’re just three games in.

The FSU football teams during the Jimbo Fisher era have had seasons that did not live up to preseason expectations. This year’s circumstances have been unique to say the least.

The season began with national championship expectations and a historic opening game against Alabama on Labor Day weekend. By the time the game ended, they were 0 – 1 with their starting quarterback out for the season. It was a night full of miscues on offense and special teams.

No one knew the extent of starting quarterback Deondre Francois’s injury when it happened. Several days later the news broke that he tore ligaments in his knee. Fisher has to attempt to save the season with a true freshman at quarterback.

The disappointing opening week was followed up with two consecutive unexpected bye weeks. Hurricane Irma forced FSU football to cancel their week two game against Louisiana-Monroe and postpone their rivalry game with Miami until October 7th.

Athletes and coaches are creatures of habit. Changes to routine are avoided at all costs. Legitimate arguments can be made that the “rust” of being out for two weeks contributed to their loss to North Carolina State.

After the Seminole’s two week hiatus, they returned to action against Atlantic division rival N.C. State. Jimbo had to get a freshman quarterback ready to play on short notice against one of the best defensive lines in the country.

N.C. State consistently plays Florida State tough – but Fisher was 5 – 2 before this season’s loss to the Wolfpack. James Blackman played well in his first career start behind center despite the loss.

While FSU picked up their first win of the season on the road against Wake Forest last week, Blackman didn’t play as well but he came up big late in the game when FSU football really needed it.  A win against Miami this week will breathe new life into a team that was written off a month ago. Jimbo’s legacy will be shaped by the way he handles the adversity of this season.
