FSU in The NFL: Week 4 Recap of Former Noles
By Jason Parker
Week 4 of the NFL season is in the books. As usual, there were plenty of former FSU Seminoles making plays around the league.
While college football is nearing the halfway point of the 2017 regular season, the National Football League has just reached the one quarter mark with the end of last weekend’s – and with it comes a series of games that some former FSU football players will love to remember and others that some former Noles would like to forget.
Some of the action included a dominating performance down in Tampa Bay, a game winner on the road for Carolina, one former FSU starter coming in as a replacement in Oakland and maybe the worst news of the day when a recent Florida State star went down with a season ending injury. Here’s a look at how some of the top former Seminoles did this past weekend across the league.
Dalvin Cook
It was the biggest story in the NFL on Sunday as the Minnesota Vikings rookie running back – and the all time leading rusher in FSU history – went down with an injury in the third quarter of the team’s loss to Detroit. The bad news came Monday with the confirmation that Cook, who had just over 360 yards and two touchdowns, will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL.
Jameis Winston
After a week to forget when he threw for three interceptions the week before in a loss, the Tampa Bay Bucs quarterback went for over 330 yards passing with three touchdowns and no picks in the team’s comeback win over the New York Giants.
Kelvin Benjamin and Graham Gano
The duo of former FSU players on the Carolina Panthers played a big role on Sunday – with the tall receiver Benjamin catching four balls for 104 yards, including a 43 yard reception against New England Patriots. It was Gano who won the game for Carolina with a 48 yard field goal as time expired for the 33-30 win.
Devonta Freeman
While the former FSU star was able to get into the end zone yet again for his fifth touchdown of the season, he only was able to gain 58 yards on 18 carries in the Atlanta Falcons’ upset loss to the Buffalo Bills.
Chris Thompson
Proving how the NFL is a hard sport to predict, the Washington Redskins running back went from one of the top names this week to a forgotten player in the team’s game plan, going for just 23 yards on six carries and one catch for four yards in the team’s Monday night loss to Kansas City.

EJ Manuel
In his first season with Oakland, the former Seminole got his first playing time of the season filling in for an injured Derek Carr in going for 106 yards passing and one interception in the Raiders’ loss to Denver. Manuel will be the quarterback for a while, starting this week against the Baltimore Ravens, as Carr is expected to miss two to six weeks with a back injury.
