FSU Football should reschedule game with Louisiana-Monroe for December
By Jason Parker
FSU football is staring down the real possibility of needing to play a 12th game this season to be bowl eligible – and the Warhawks are still there.
When the final gun sounded on September 23rd against N.C. State, FSU football had come to the realization that they were starting a football season 0-2 for the first time in nearly three decades. While the Seminoles were able to bounce back that season and win out (including victories over four ranked teams), this year might be a much steeper hill to climb.
Even with this week’s victory over Wake Forest to make the Noles 1-2 on the season, Florida State is facing the real possibility that they could be fighting for bowl eligibility toward the end of the season. With a game this week against Miami and later contests against Louisville, Clemson and even Florida, the Noles are staring at the chance they could have six losses this regular season.
While that would not normally be a big deal since FBS teams went to a 12 game slate, the Seminoles have just 11 games after canceling their game with Louisiana Monroe due to Hurricane Irma. A six loss season would mean no bowl game for the first time since 1981 and, more importantly, the first losing season for the program since 1976.
However, all that could change with one look at the calendar. If FSU football doesn’t make it to the ACC Championship Game – which would almost be all but confirmed with another conference loss – December 2nd would be open for a game. As it would have it, the Warhawks have a bye week on that date and FSU officials have thought about the idea (h/t ESPN.com):
"“We have been in contact with ULM, and we continue to explore options,” (associate AD Rob) Wilson said. “Currently that would be our only possible date if we were to make up the game this year. “"
Now, do I want to see the Seminoles playing in Charlotte on that date playing for a conference crown instead of being in Tallahassee playing for the Gasparilla Bowl? Of course I do – and I think that it is possible if this team plays up to the level of talent they have, even with a newbie under center in quarterback James Blackman.
Being realistic, all options have to be considered and it would be in the best interest of the Seminoles to tentatively reschedule the game for that date. If it comes to the end of October and the Seminoles are 5-2 with games left against Syracuse and Delaware State on the schedule, they won’t need the game to become bowl eligible. However, it doesn’t hurt to plan ahead.

After all, the game has already been cancelled one time so it wouldn’t be the end of the world to do it again.
