Derwin James will lead the team in tackles

Derwin James was second the team in tackles in 2015 behind Reggie Northrup, so there’s no reason he shouldn’t lead the team in tackles in 2017.

James is arguably one of the most physically gifted athletes in college football with the ability to lineup at multiple positions.

He’s a safety that can play corner, rush off the edge, play the star role or line up as a linebacker if need be. That ability alone puts him in position to make more plays.

However, James is an instinctual player too with a nose for the football who had 91 total tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks as a true freshman.

James did miss almost all of last season with a meniscus injury, but is 100 percent healthy and looked like a better version of himself in the FSU spring game.

FSU defensive coordinator Charles Kelly will use James in many different roles this season. That versatility will help turn him into a top 5 selection in the 2018 NFL Draft.
