FSU Football: Complaining about ad on Doak scoreboard must stop

Some FSU football fans are losing their mind over a McDonald’s billboard placed on the new scoreboard – and it really has got to stop soon.

In just over a month, FSU football will hit the field for the first time in the 2017 season inside Doak Campbell Stadium when they host Louisiana-Monroe in the home opener. It will also be the debut of the new south end zone scoreboard and jumbotron, part of the continuing efforts to keep the stadium as one of the best in the country.

For some fans of the Seminoles, the new board is nothing to ‘love’ – but it has nothing to do with any of the numbers or stats on it.

Nope, a growing number of fans are upset because on the outside of the board, facing Langford Green, is an advertisement for McDonald’s. Apparently, that is a no-no to some in garnet and gold who can’t believe that the school would try to make money to pay off all the new perks to the stadium.

The latest person to bring up the ad is Tallahassee Democrat columnist Corey Clark, who has a problem with the fact that the ad – for those looking on from a distance – doesn’t have a clear FSU football image tied to it like ads on the outside of the north end zone board:

"From certain vantage points, like the one I had the first time I saw the sign, the McDonald’s one in the south end zone looks like just a straight McDonald’s sign. It’s hard to see, on first glance, anything FSU related at all.So it looks like just a straight cash grab by Florida State. With no concern about the actual aesthetic."

I am the first person to defend the FSU football fan base and have gone to bat plenty of times for #FSUTwitter as a proud graduate, but I have to step back on this one.

So it’s okay to have ads on the scoreboard when it’s turned on and facing INSIDE the stadium…but on the OUTSIDE is something that should be banned? This almost seems like people are finding something to complain about that has no actual relevance. Maybe, if some of the fans who are complaining would actually go to the games, the school wouldn’t have to find so much outside corporate sponsorship like this.

If the athletic department wants to puts different sponsorships around the stadium, who cares? Doak Campbell Stadium is going to be the best looking stadium in college football more for what goes on INSIDE THE STADIUM – the on field product and the fans supporting the Seminoles – and all a McDonald’s ad is going to do is make people hungry for a post game snack.

There are plenty of other things to focus your attention on, FSU football fans…don’t get sidetracked by something that isn’t all that important. It makes the rest of the fan base look like whiners when we couldn’t care less.
